A man hospitalized with post-surgical staph infection that went septic experienced an NDE while conscious but in considerable pain with erratic vital signs and hallucinations. Antibiotics had been ineffective. Before the NDE, he logically determined it was impossible to live with such overwhelming pain. His first sensation was awareness of leaving his body, absence of gravity and physical constraints. Looking down, he saw his body appearing clay-like and very dead. He arrived at a staging area with bright light emanating from a hidden source on his right and an immense wall of darkness like a lake surface on his left. Multitudes of small, dark shell-shaped entities rose through the dark surface. Recent arrivals in the staging area stopped between light and dark, with dust-like material falling around them as if shedding what they brought. When he wondered about the light source, consciousness responded that the light was love and love kept the light alive. When questioning if truly dead, he learned he must decide immediately to go back or not, like a light switch on or off. A woman in a white lab coat with clipboard appeared and when asked for guidance, told him with slight exasperation: "Just go do good." He returned to his body and eventually regained health. Those words have resonated and guided his life daily since.
