In October 1996, while attending a work meeting in Aruba, the 39-year-old experiencer chose a snorkeling cruise during free time. Despite the captain's recommendation to wear life vests, he jumped into the Caribbean Sea with only snorkel gear and frog shoes, about 200 meters from shore. The 2 PM waves quickly overwhelmed him, dragging him 100 meters from shore. After swallowing seawater, losing equipment, and exhausting his strength trying to reach rocks for rest, he began drowning.
As he sank, his wristwatch caught sunlight and appeared to shine like a sun, striking him as wonderful and weird. Looking up, he saw sunbeams penetrating the water; looking down revealed diffused light fading to black depths. The darkness both frightened and calmed him as he accepted his death with resignation. Instantly, he found himself in his home observing his daughters, ages 5 and 7, playing together. The satisfaction of seeing them safe brought him joy. Next, he visited his mother's house where she worked in her small store, worrying about how she would handle news of his drowning as her only son. Most remarkably, he then found himself in an unfamiliar living room conversing at length with a childhood friend who had died years earlier - an anti-narcotics policeman accidentally shot during a raid in Brazil. The friend discussed needing money and plans to work nights as a security guard after his police shifts. When the experiencer exclaimed that this was impossible because he was dead, the friend denied it, insisting the death was just a dream. This reality confusion lasted until he heard someone yelling "Are you okay?" A sales manager had rescued him, retrieving his lost shoe and helping him to rocks and then the beach. The next day, verification revealed his daughters and mother wore exactly the clothes and performed the exact activities he witnessed during his NDE. Though colleagues joked he faked the incident for attention, he knew he had spent subjective hours traveling thousands of miles in under ten minutes, fundamentally changing his life.
