At age seven, during the Great Depression, the experiencer developed severe abdominal pain. Due to poverty and reliance on home remedies, they were initially treated with castor oil and enemas, which worsened the condition. Days later, they were taken to a hospital 50 miles away where another enema was administered before doctors discovered a ruptured appendix with peritonitis. The attending physician told medical students the child would not survive until morning.
During that critical night, the experiencer traveled through a tunnel toward a brilliant white light. Through this luminous gateway came their seven-year-old sister who had died in a snowstorm two years earlier. The sister appeared joyful and excited, skipping toward them while laughing and gathering flowers to bring as a gift. Behind her, the experiencer's mother (who had died two days after the sister from grief) came hurrying forward, urgently waving and repeatedly calling out "Go back! Go back!" Understanding their mother's command meant they were supposed to return to life, the experiencer chose to go back to their body. They remained hospitalized for three months with a drain tube, defying the doctor's fatal prognosis and amazing him with their continued improvement against overwhelming odds. The experience instilled a profound sense of life purpose. The world seemed clearer afterward, and they felt destined to remain on Earth for important reasons. This sense of purpose was fulfilled through their children, who all became successful professionals - two teachers, a nurse, and a marketing analyst - helping the world as the experiencer had envisioned.
