The experiencer was giving birth when she developed severe complications from bleeding behind the placenta. The difficult labor left her extremely weak, requiring forceps to deliver the baby. After her daughter was born and briefly placed on her chest, she became too weak to hold the child. The medical situation rapidly deteriorated as her husband was urgently ushered from the room with tears in his eyes.
The attending doctor was sweating profusely as he called for a specialist. A nurse began slapping her face trying to keep her conscious while telling her something about her daughter. The nurse then reported to the doctor that she could not find blood pressure or pulse. As the specialist arrived announcing plans for a blood transfusion, the experiencer began her transition. She felt incredibly peaceful and relaxed as her consciousness separated from her body. A light appeared in the corner of the room, growing progressively bigger and brighter. She found herself moving toward this expanding light, no longer attached to anything physical, experiencing profound peace. Just as she was enjoying this blissful state, she suddenly remembered she had just given birth. The thought of her newborn daughter created a sense of "unfinished duty" and she declared in her mind: "I have a daughter to raise." An image of her husband also appeared in her thoughts. With this realization of her earthly responsibilities, she made the conscious choice to return to her body. The experience left her with a deep knowing about the peaceful nature of death and the power of love and duty to anchor one to life.
