The experiencer was 37 years old when he became severely ill while lying in bed. The pain and suffering became overwhelming, leading him to give up on life. During what a doctor identified as a coronary event, he experienced a profound out-of-body state.
Upon surrendering to death, he found himself floating in a beautiful lit grey volume in complete bliss - a feeling he described as beyond words. The sense of peace was absolute, and he thought that if this was death, it was brilliant. He noticed a tunnel at the far end of this peaceful space and decided to explore it. However, as he floated toward the tunnel, a massive steel gate with rivets and straps suddenly slammed down, blocking his path with clear intention. He was immediately pulled back into his body and the pain returned. Unwilling to accept this, he managed to leave his body again and returned to the blissful grey space. When he attempted to approach the tunnel a second time, the steel gate blocked him once more and he was back in his physical body. During his out-of-body experience, a doctor observed his monitor and declared he had suffered a coronary. The experience taught him the true meaning of being "at peace" after death. Despite identifying as an atheist with no concern about afterlife, he now confidently assures others that death brings peace, not nothingness. He uses this knowledge to comfort grieving families.
