A healthcare professional with atrial fibrillation experienced complete cardiac failure on September 4, 2017, after beginning a trial of two medications to reduce her heart rate. She collapsed at home and was transferred to a tertiary cardiac center where her heart rate was 18 bpm and oxygen saturation was 79%, with other vital organs shutting down. Her husband was told there was slim chance for survival and the cardiac team was on standby for a heart-lung machine while awaiting transplant.
During the ambulance transfer and initial emergency care, she was highly distressed and imploring staff to help her, remembering all interactions vividly. At some point while stabilizing, she lost consciousness and experienced a profound vision. She found herself quietly observing a beautiful early morning fall day with ground mist shining through golden sunlight. She witnessed a vast forest of birch trees with wind gently blowing, observing the beauty and tranquility with reassuring peacefulness. Everything then went dark, and as she gained consciousness, everything was black and murky. She experienced a pleasant sensation of effortlessly and powerfully swimming to the surface of a deep lake, and upon reaching the surface, felt an incredibly overwhelming sense of serenity and tranquility unlike anything previously experienced. Though no specific veridical observations were reported, she maintained clear memory of all medical interactions before losing consciousness. She was stabilized on medication and discharged within 6 days, immediately returning to work and presenting at a national palliative care conference within a week. The experience profoundly impacted her life perspective. After a year of reflection, she resigned from her position to pursue her passions, with hiking becoming a priority. She began selectively sharing her health crisis story with colleagues but notably excluded the near-death experience, only deciding to submit her account after learning about an IANDS speaker event. As a healthcare professional, she specifically chose not to share the NDE with her medical colleagues.
