A woman with congenital non-compaction ventricular cardiomyopathy experienced sudden cardiac arrest during her son's rehearsal dinner in her garden with 65 guests present. After noticing her heart rhythm becoming irregular, her last conscious thought was about getting beta blockers before she suddenly realized "Oh! My God! I'm dead!" She was clinically dead for approximately 10 minutes while her nephew performed CPR and her husband used their home AED device, shocking her 7+ times.
During her death state, she experienced profound peace rather than expected fear, knowing everything would be fine without her despite missing her son's wedding. She became aware of a misty light and warm breeze passing through her, feeling no need for a physical body and finding humor in never having to worry about weight, dinner, or clothing again. She experienced a profound realization that all life is interconnected - not just human life but all living things sharing awareness. She understood that humans are self-centered to the exclusion of other life forms, and that the entire universe is connected through life and consciousness. While she reported no specific veridical observations of the resuscitation efforts, she was vaguely aware of becoming "somewhat alive" after multiple shocks but felt disappointed to leave the serenity behind. She also experienced hallucinations in the weeks before and years after her cardiac arrest, seeing groups of people watching her and paintings changing in their frames, which she recognized as not real. She recovered after 15 hours in the hospital, watching her son's wedding from the ICU on an iPad. The experience left her with lasting difficulty communicating her experience and dealing with others' trauma about her death, as she hadn't experienced their perspective of the event.
