A man dying from necrotizing fasciitis underwent multiple surgeries over five weeks, experiencing a near-death event during one of the earlier operations when he was critically ill with sepsis. Though he believes he was never clinically dead, he came very close to death during this life-threatening medical crisis.
During one surgery, after receiving oxygen and while surgery tech Larry held his hand, he found himself floating above his body and the operating room staff as they worked quickly to intubate him and begin the procedure. From this elevated perspective, he observed the medical team working on his sick body but felt no physical sensations from the procedures being performed. He noticed what appeared to be a doorway above the operating room doors where deceased loved ones were filing in to watch his surgery as if viewing a movie. He saw his maternal grandmother, an aunt, and a cousin who had passed away, along with many unknown people also observing the procedure. No words were exchanged, but he telepathically understood they were communicating love and reassurance that everything would be okay. The primary observation was seeing the medical team from above working to intubate him and start surgery while he floated outside his body. He also observed deceased relatives entering through a doorway above the OR doors to watch the procedure. He experienced complete peace during the event and felt happy to see his deceased relatives. Time seemed not to exist during the experience. Upon waking in recovery and being returned to his room, he immediately told his mother about the experience, which remains one of his most vivid memories from his extended hospitalization.
