A man underwent a minor back surgery during which he briefly saw a light but couldn't focus on it, experiencing overwhelming love and peace without understanding it at the time. Three years later, during a major back operation, he experienced a profound near-death experience that fundamentally changed his worldview and perception of reality.
During the major surgery, he woke up halfway through in extraordinary pain and tried to sit up, grabbing the clamp holding him open. When staff forcefully restrained him, he felt sharp neck pain and suddenly found himself above his body, watching the medical team attempt resuscitation and intubation. He then saw and understood that the light he perceived was emanating from himself. Once he understood this, he could focus beyond the light into a realm of overwhelming love, peace, and infinite knowledge. He experienced existence without time, where one could be at any point from the beginning to the end of existence. He perceived that everyone and everything are interconnected, that all people who exist on Earth are simultaneously present in that realm, and that only peace, love, and pure understanding exist there - no negative emotions whatsoever. The specific observation was watching the medical team from above as they tried to resuscitate him and attempted intubation after he grabbed the surgical clamp. He saw this from an out-of-body perspective immediately after feeling the sharp neck pain when they slammed his head back. He awoke two days later but never told the surgeons about his experience, fearing they would stop treating him. He kept the experience secret for 10 years until spontaneously sharing it with a grieving elderly woman who had lost her son and husband. The experience left him unable to relate to people as before, finding everyday conversation meaningless and feeling he has an unknown purpose.
