On October 10, 2023, the experiencer had a kidney stone that breached his right kidney, leading to him passing out at home. He was transported to the ER where he went into septic shock with multi-organ failure including acute rectal failure, kidney failure, respiratory failure, and heart failure that developed on day three. He was placed on a ventilator and dialysis for 8 days, remaining in the ICU for 18 days total, followed by 2 weeks in a rehabilitation hospital.
While sedated and on the ventilator, he experienced initial terror in total blackness with no bodily sensations, vision, or hearing. He was confused, thinking he might be dead, and screamed soundlessly for God. A small light then appeared and expanded into an unfolding cloud accompanied by overwhelming peace. He experienced bands of love, comfort, bliss, peace, and compassion, receiving the word "GOODNESS" not audibly but as a knowing. Upon accepting the invitation to step into this presence, he felt negative attachments being washed away and experienced clarity and positive feelings beyond anything previously known. He had specific memories surface: his mother holding him as a child with her hand on his cheek, and Joe Gilliam, a beloved Black man from his childhood who worked at his uncle's cleaners. He also recalled a relationship where he realized showing consistent GOODNESS would have changed everything. The presence stayed with him as he began hearing his 29-year-old daughter's voice, which created ripples in the darkness until he could see her face at his bedside. While deeply meaningful spiritually, no veridical observations of the physical environment were reported during the unconscious period. The experience centered on encountering the divine presence of GOODNESS. On day 8 the ventilator was removed and he became aware he was in the ICU. The presence of GOODNESS remained with him, leading him to research the concept extensively. He discovered GOODNESS throughout the Bible and realized "GOODNESS is God." He continues to experience daily miracles with thoughts and people manifesting in his life. He remains under medical care as his heart has not returned to normal but continues gaining strength.
