In 1981, while serving in the US Army in Germany, the subject was in a serious car accident, breaking their left femur in two places, six ribs, collapsing both lungs, suffering a concussion and entering a 10-day coma. Right after the accident, they experienced watching from behind as passengers pulled their lifeless body from the car, horrified to realize it was them. They tried to scream but no words came out. They then moved through a dark place toward a white light where they met their mother who had died in 1967. They felt the presence of other deceased loved ones. Their mother took them to see the core of the white light - a Supreme Being/God whose brightness exceeded the sun but caused no pain to look at. The light communicated that they were there too soon and would return to their body, that they were loved and created without mistakes, and should stop lying about who they were (understood as coming out as gay). They were told they would help someone to the light and could stay eternally next time. After the experience, 13 years later in 1994, while caring for a friend dying of AIDS, the same bright light appeared in their apartment thanking them for helping their friend pass.
