In 1943, a five-year-old child was rushed to emergency surgery for an unbearable inguinal hernia requiring immediate operation. In the operating room, they were instructed to count backward from 10 as ether anesthesia was administered through a gauze cloth over their nose and mouth. As they sank into unconsciousness while counting, they suddenly felt their body rise into the air above the surgeons and operating table, looking down on the little boy lying there with two men hovering over him. The sensation of floating was exciting and completely novel. After briefly observing the surgical activity below, their floating self slowly turned toward a window high on the wall of the operating room. Through this window, they could see a bright, beckoning light. Fascinated, they began drifting toward the light source, wanting to pass through the window opening and into the light. Then suddenly everything disappeared. Their next memory was lying in a hospital bed vomiting from the lingering effects of the ether, with an upset nurse scolding them for making a mess. When they immediately told the nurse about their experience, she dismissed it as a dream. Their mother had the same reaction when told during her visit, insisting they had been dreaming while asleep on the operating table. Since no one believed them, they convinced themselves it must have been a dream and never spoke of it again until near-death experiences became more accepted. Now they believe they were given too much ether and died on the operating table. Their only regret is that the experience didn't go further, but they were only five years old at the time. The memory has remained perfectly clear and unforgettable for 65 years.
