A man on a boat in Florida dove backwards into shallow water, landing on his head on the firm sandy bottom. He experienced intense pressure like being in a vice, with time dramatically slowing - a fraction of a second felt like 20 minutes. He heard 6-7 vertebrae collapsing in his upper spine over this extended time period, experiencing no pain. Facing impending death, he became completely honest with himself and reviewed his life. He saw that his imagined magnificent future was entirely illusory and he had been living to please others while getting no closer to his desires. He realized he never wanted to be married but did it to avoid upsetting people, had been pretending to be what others wanted, and planned to find happiness only after making everyone else happy first. When the pressure stopped, he stood up with compressed voice, surprised to be alive and still married. X-rays showed nothing broken. The experience fundamentally changed him - he lost ability to maintain social facades, left his job to become an actuary, then experienced four years of increasing depression. Eventually he gave up all dreams, was filled with light, and experienced profound spiritual awakening with lucid dreaming and impossible synchronicities.
