A man in his 70s with sleep apnea experienced a near-death event when his CPAP mask became dislodged during sleep, causing him to suffocate. He theorized that the obstruction cut off air to his lungs, leading to both cardiac and respiratory arrest. During the experience, he traveled through a tunnel at extremely high speed, encountering a bright intelligent being of light. He was directed to a dark planet with jagged rocks via a large glowing disc that hovered over his head. There he met someone familiar who seemed happy to see him, though he couldn't initially identify the person. He sensed he was there more for the other person's benefit than his own. Upon returning to his body, he found himself without heartbeat or breathing. He consciously took a breath to restart his breathing and experienced five strong hiccup-like sensations before his heart began beating again. A nurse later told him it would be impossible to be conscious without heartbeat and breathing, confirming he would have been dead. Medical examinations showed no lasting damage.
