About 20 years ago in Eastern Europe, an engineer was walking to work through a snowy park when attacked by a stranger attempting rape and possibly murder. During the violent struggle, the attacker began strangling the victim, whose winter coat prevented effective self-defense. Realizing these were the last seconds of life, the experiencer expected to lose consciousness from lack of oxygen but instead found themselves in a different, very realistic place. This appeared as a huge, boundless abyss extending infinitely in all directions, possibly as big as the cosmos. It was very dark yet visible, completely empty with no stars, lights, objects or beings - the experiencer would be its only inhabitant. The place felt profoundly unpleasant due to something essential being absent, creating a cold feeling that wasn't physical cold or evil, but rather a fundamental lack. The experiencer stayed subjectively for several seconds, overwhelmed with horror at the prospect of ending up there. Desperately screaming for help in their mind, though not expecting any as they weren't religious, the experiencer was suddenly back fighting. The attacker had stopped strangling, and the victim got the idea to bite, successfully injuring the attacker's palm with full strength plus fear, ending the fight quickly. The experiencer long believed this might have been a hallucination from stress or oxygen deprivation, only later learning about the void in NDE literature.
