During a severe asthma attack, the experiencer was rushed to hospital where they stopped breathing and required resuscitation. As a child in a hospital for dying children with collapsed lungs, they had seen "Takers" - opaque beings who led dying children away - and was determined never to take their hands, keeping fists tightly closed. During this adult crisis, after rapid discussion and pulling sensations, they found themselves sitting cross-legged suspended in a void. This wasn't darkness or light but absolute NOTHING - complete emptiness beyond expression. No emotions existed, not even calm. Time became meaningless; they existed there for eternity in both directions. Struggling to recall something important, they remembered the difficulty breathing and associated feelings, then spent time examining the life connected to those feelings. This wasn't judgment but measuring, weighing failures against successes, becoming painfully aware that whatever the measure, nothing could be done to fix it. This became their concept of heaven and hell - one's own personal measure. Then pain returned with loud voices, indicating return to life. No relief accompanied return; they wanted neither the void nor life back. The experience eliminated fear of death, bringing acceptance of doing their best in life since nothing more can fix that final measuring, though preferring complete non-existence to either state.
