During a family beach outing, the experiencer followed a friend into deeper water but lost sight of him and became exhausted from swimming. Waves began washing over their face, making breathing difficult, and they realized they might not survive. After a final glimpse of the shoreline with people unaware of the crisis, a profound calm descended. The experiencer felt a sensation of floating above the water, observing themselves from outside their body with complete detachment and no distress. The scene appeared like watching a movie, with no fear or pain. From this elevated perspective, they witnessed a man grabbing their hair to pull them from the water. The experience seemed to happen quickly yet time felt distorted. Upon being pulled ashore, consciousness returned with intense physical sensations - chest pain and burning lungs feeling like fire as air rushed back in. The choking and gasping for breath marked the return to physical awareness. Later reflection revealed the remarkable fact that they had observed their own rescue from an external vantage point, seeing themselves being pulled from the water by their hair, a perspective impossible from normal consciousness.
