In April 1999, the experiencer had a mild heart attack following bypass surgery from 1990. While recovering at home, he went upstairs to rest while his wife and daughter were having their hair done downstairs. Lying on the bed, he experienced a strange floating sensation like riding ocean waves, feeling cold and unable to move. When it subsided and returned, he called for his wife who noted his gray color and immediately called 911. He felt he was about to die and wanted to tell his wife and daughter goodbye and how much he loved them. Later told he was speaking in a strange, coherent language no one understood.
He found himself standing at the base of an enormously high mountain with an opening. Entering a dimly lit tunnel, he walked toward the light source. Rounding a bend, he encountered his father who had died Christmas Eve 1998. His father appeared 40-50 years younger than at death, with deceased relatives and pets dimly visible in the background. His father spoke saying "Go back, it's not your time yet." Paramedics stabilized him and rushed him to emergency, then ICU, where extreme electrical failure in the heart was diagnosed. A defibrillator was installed the next day. Doctors called it Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) and credited the paramedics' fast action with saving his life. During his ICU stay, multiple doctors visited to hear his story, saying such experiences occurred more than he might think. The experience brought him peace and confidence about the afterlife's reality. Though never much of a churchgoer but always spiritual, he now firmly believes in the continuation of souls, with the future dependent on the quality and goodness of present existence.
