In January 1950, at age fifteen and a half in Cape Town, South Africa, the experiencer contracted pneumonia, which was virtually a death sentence before antibiotics. Though treated with the new wonder drug Penicillin, he experienced a profound NDE. One morning in the hospital, he felt a comfortable warm tingling starting in his knees and proceeding up his legs. The bright sunny day visible through windows turned a beautiful deep purple with golden lights twinkling. He felt warm and comfortable, then began floating up toward the ceiling.
Looking down from high above, he saw himself asleep in bed very far away, as though much higher than ceiling level. In complete silence and coolness despite the midsummer heat, he watched through the ward door as his parents came running in, led by a white-coated doctor. Nurses brought mobile screens around his bed. His mother held his hand to her face, appearing to be crying, while his father stood beside her. They stayed for a long time before leaving slowly and stooped over. This scene remains vivid decades later. He also noted it was very windy where he was floating. He woke normally with no immediate memory until months later when his mother revealed they'd received an emergency call that he was near death. When they arrived, he had already passed away, but received another call at home saying he had miraculously revived. When these details triggered his memory, he described everything he had seen - them entering the ward, the mobile screens, his mother holding his hand - which she confirmed completely. In 1968, his wife experienced identical symptoms during a hemorrhage (warm tingling, purple sunset with golden stars, asking "What are you doing down there?"). Recognizing his own NDE symptoms, he got emergency help that saved her life, as she was in cardiac arrest lying in blood. She recovered fully, and he knew his presence that evening saved her from certain death.
