At age 16, the experiencer was driving too fast as a new driver when their car went off the road, hit a bump, became airborne, and overturned in a drainage ditch. Though only sustaining minor injuries including a broken nose, cuts and bruises, they experienced a profound out-of-body experience during the crash. After the car left the road, everything shifted into slow motion. In the brief seconds before impact, their mind raced through multiple thoughts about missing homecoming, how their parents would react, and who would call their boyfriend. Upon hitting the bump, they suddenly felt themselves floating above their right shoulder, pressed against the roof of the car which seemed a foot higher than normal. From this vantage point, they watched their physical body move like a rag doll in slow motion below them. They remember thinking "What the hell? Is that me? What's going on?" The experience ended abruptly when the car finished flipping. They didn't realize the car had overturned until removing their seatbelt and falling from the seat. The experiencer notes they never died or was seriously injured, yet had this profound OBE that remains difficult to explain to others who often dismiss it. The experience provided them comfort knowing others have had similar experiences.
