On July 18, 2019, a man was in a severe motorcycle accident that caused multiple injuries and internal bleeding. In the emergency department, he was bleeding out and "coded" twice, experiencing two distinct near-death episodes. During his first experience, he was initially inside his body looking around the hospital room with one eye open when his girlfriend approached, smiled, and told him everything was okay and he wasn't going to die. Despite her reassurance, he closed his eyes feeling he was already dead. He heard his mother screaming "How could they do this to my son?" His consciousness then lifted above his body and he found himself floating in blackness. In his second experience, viewing only through his eyes without seeing his body, he found himself in an open warehouse watching his family and friends walking up a grassy hill toward a church for his funeral. His vision progressively pixelated until he could only see shades of grey, and his consciousness began floating into nothingness. He remembers thinking "Is this it? Is this what happens when you die?" The experience left him feeling more alone and hopeless than ever before in his life. Having lived with depression his whole life, he describes this as a different kind of darkness and disappointment than he had ever experienced. The visions of his own funeral and the profound sense of isolation marked this as a particularly distressing NDE.
