In October 1985, while horseback riding at a summer camp ranch in West Virginia, a 31-year-old woman experienced a severe accident when her horse was spooked and bucked violently. She was thrown airborne, landing directly on her head with her neck bent so forcefully that her face was pressed to her chest, causing severe spinal injuries and torn ligaments. Her consciousness immediately bifurcated - simultaneously aware of her body's injuries without feeling pain while watching a complete life review that played backwards through all 31 years, every relationship and feeling, back to conception. She then traveled through a tunnel at incredible speed toward a brilliant light, experiencing pure consciousness without body awareness. In this light, she encountered what seemed to be guardian angels or her higher self, engaging in wordless instantaneous communication. She was given a choice to transition or return, with options of being paraplegic, quadriplegic, or living in constant pain. She chose to return with chronic pain to complete unfinished purposes. Upon returning, she had to make a conscious decision to reconnect with her physical body to move her limbs. She discovered her neck had literally disconnected from the spinal column and snapped back, saved only by years of yoga practice making her strong and flexible. The experience led to major life changes including relocating to warmer climates, changing careers multiple times, and ultimately pursuing ecology and teaching meditation.
