On August 2, 1961, a five-year-old girl drowned at Highland Lake, New Jersey during her grandfather's funeral wake. While at a neighbor's house for lunch, she slipped on wet rocks and hit her head, falling unconscious into the lake. She experienced slow suffocation underwater before her consciousness separated from her body. From an out-of-body perspective, she observed the entire rescue scene - people screaming, various resuscitation attempts on the dock, her father saying "Please God not another one," and performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. She watched herself being loaded into the ambulance marked DOA, observed her parents in a separate waiting room, and saw nuns at the hospital windows. In the emergency room, she witnessed the doctor ordering adrenaline STAT and nurses cutting off her new shirt. She felt the excruciating pain when adrenaline was injected directly into her heart, forcing her back into her body. After ten days in a coma with a Glasgow scale rating of 1, she miraculously awakened against all medical expectations. The experience left her with permanent physical effects including blue-tinged blood, breathing difficulties, and years of medical restrictions, but also gave her a unique perspective on life and death.
