The experiencer had two traumatic foot injuries in two weeks: foot caught in car door and crushed in merry-go-round. They developed osteomyelitis with foot swelling to football size and were rushed to ER. Despite mother warning about penicillin allergy, they received massive dose, went into anaphylactic shock and clinically died. While barely conscious when brought in, they suddenly felt themselves rising to corner of green room, seeing mother and doctor leaning over their body. Everything was crystal clear, more vibrantly colored and detailed than usual. The doctor told mother he didn't think they could be revived; mother was crying. They felt adult-like emotions, great love and compassion for mother, wanting to tell her it was all right to be dead but understanding they couldn't communicate. They felt great sadness for mother but none for themselves. Next they were awake in different room after revival, looking at bandaged foot. This began their continuous childhood memories. The experience was the most real they ever had. They kept it secret until hearing Raymond Moody speak about NDEs in mid-1970s. The lasting effect is no fear of death, increased compassion and understanding. They now consider the experience a gift.
