At age 6 or 7, during a family swim at an abandoned gravel pit, the child tried to join adults in deeper water but was sent back. Walking into water, they stepped into a hole and felt nothing beneath them. They sank, struggling with bubbles rising and darkness surrounding them. A very bright warm light appeared above, and they stopped struggling, feeling calm, tranquil, and at peace as never before. They felt drawn into the light, content, happy, and eager to continue toward unknown bliss and beauty. No beings were seen and no sounds heard. Their uncle noticed their ponytail breaking the water surface and pulled them up by it. They felt anger at being stopped from their journey. The uncle who saved them died a few years later in a truck accident. The experience left them unafraid of death, though not seeking it. They became more compassionate and comfortable with death and dead bodies, able to touch and kiss deceased relatives at funerals when others couldn't, understanding bodies were just remains while the person went somewhere lovely and safe.
