On April 20, 1980, the patient was riding his Honda 750K motorcycle too fast on mountain roads near La Luz, New Mexico when he lost control on a tight curve. The bike high-sided and both rider and motorcycle went flying after hitting a car. He was unconscious when taken by ambulance to Holloman AFB hospital, then transferred via Medevac helicopter to Fort Bliss due to severity of injuries including a broken left femur.
During the helicopter transport, he became aware of sitting up and looking out the window watching rotor blades, perceiving everything in slow motion. Looking around the aircraft, he discovered he was sitting next to his own body on a gurney. His only thought was matter-of-fact: "Wow. I'm dead." He then found himself in the presence of pure Consciousness in an endless pale blue light. The entity communicated: "No, you are not dead. All is not as you've been told. You've been here before; you'll be here again." A wave of information was poured into him that would become the source of insights over the years. The experience occurred within moments but felt eternal in the timeless space. He woke up four days later in ICU in traction. In subsequent years, he experienced spontaneous OBEs, precognitive dreams (one life-saving), enhanced intuition, and loss of both fear of death and zest for life. He began extensive reading of esoteric information to understand what happened. The experience remains vivid 40 years later. He concluded three certainties: there is an Ultimate Creator, we are soul beings in physical experience, and we survive physical reality. Despite hearing various explanations from endorphins to devil deception, he remains convinced of the experience's authenticity.
