Joy attempted suicide in March 1999 by overdosing on anti-epileptic medications from the medicine cabinet, following the loss of her grandmother who raised her, rejection by her parents, and profound loneliness. She felt like a poisonous influence to loved ones and believed they would be better off without her. After swallowing all available pills, she lost consciousness as the day progressed.
During her experience, Joy found herself falling into a dark pit, being crushed by rocks while watching herself decay and rot. Worms and beetles squirmed in her vision and flesh. A low, guttural voice spoke to her, saying "You're in..." with the last part obscured by other voices. The overwhelming feelings were of deepest despair and palpable evil. This hellish vision represented a realm of darkness and torment. After blacking out, Joy awakened to the most beautiful singing she had ever heard - angels singing along with church bells. Her family was trying to resuscitate her at this time. She could see and hear the angels and bells clearly, though her family could not perceive them. The contrast between the dark and light portions of her experience was profound - from despair to incredible joy and peace. Joy survived and was taken to the emergency room. The experience left her with special knowledge about dire events and a changed perspective on life. She has since lost her son whom she loved deeply, and on the night he died, her grandmother came to her. She remains uncertain in her beliefs but knows the experience was absolutely real. She has become more solitary since the NDE, and the feelings associated with both the dark and light aspects remain with her today. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience contains significant biblical elements including a hellish realm with darkness, decay, and torment (matching biblical descriptions of hell/Hades), angelic beings singing (consistent with heavenly worship in Revelation), and lasting spiritual transformation. The progression from darkness to light parallels biblical themes of salvation from death to life. The appearance of her grandmother at her son's death aligns with biblical concepts of the communion of saints. Unbiblical elements: None clearly identified. While the experience was triggered by suicide (which some traditions consider sinful), the mixed nature of the experience (hell then angels) actually aligns with biblical mercy and divine intervention. No reincarnation, new age concepts, or contradictions to scripture are present.
