A three-year-old girl from Toronto went to a local swimming pool with her father and six-year-old sister in the early 1970s. During an adult-only swim period, she impulsively jumped into the deep end, thinking she could sink to the bottom and push herself back up. Instead, she began spinning underwater and ran out of air, experiencing what appeared to be a drowning incident requiring resuscitation.
During the experience, she found herself at the bottom of the pool feeling wonderful and relieved. She could swim freely without needing air and observed her sister and others gathered around something on the pool deck, not realizing it was her own body being resuscitated. While swimming underwater, she witnessed a nativity scene materialize - Mary in a dark blue robe and lighter veil, Joseph in brown holding a staff, and a manger. The scene transitioned from darkness to bright light as Mary looked up and smiled at her. Behind Mary's eyes, she recognized a familiar bright light that filled her with love and the knowledge that she was important. The child saw Mary smile radiantly and felt overwhelming love and recognition, knowing this presence from before. She desperately wanted to go to Mary but was suddenly pulled back into her body, finding herself sitting on the pool edge with her angry father lecturing her about being selfish. Her sister asked if she was scared, and she replied it was fun, not understanding why everyone was so upset. It wasn't until 2021, at age 56, that she learned from her sister that she had actually stopped breathing and needed resuscitation. The experience included classic NDE elements of leaving the body, encountering religious figures, experiencing unconditional love, and being sent back. The witness verification came decades later when her sister confirmed the medical emergency. The experience left her unafraid of death, knowing "we don't really die."
