An inexperienced driver on the Massachusetts Turnpike lost control of a borrowed car while attempting to pass a school bus that suddenly pulled in front of them. After slamming the brakes and jerking the steering wheel, the car swerved uncontrollably across the highway while other drivers slowed to avoid collision. In a moment of panic and realization that this was the end, their panic suddenly left entirely and vision blacked out. They felt lifted out of the car and over the scene, experiencing an overwhelming sense of love and homecoming. They thought "So this is the end of this particular chapter" and felt elements of identity dropping away one by one - blond, tall, female, violinist - realizing they had forgotten their true nature in life and were now returning to that truth. They thought of their parents with regret about their devastation but felt comforting knowledge that they too would eventually know the truth and it wasn't really that long a time. The experience did not result in permanent peace - they developed PTSD and a lasting phobia about highway driving, for which they later received EMDR treatment. They have maintained a lifelong interest in mysticism and began intensive meditation practice the year before sharing this account.
