In summer 1980 in Porto Alegre, Brazil, an 8-year-old boy and his two brothers (ages 9 and 10) went fishing with their father. While walking along a river, they attempted to cross by holding onto a bush that extended over the fast-moving water. The 9-year-old brother lost his grip and was swept away, prompting all three boys to end up drowning in the river. The experiencer recalls dying, unable to breathe as water filled his lungs, feeling terrible pain from objects hitting him in the river. He prayed to God for help and immediately felt arms around him with a voice saying "Relax, everything is going to be okay." He could suddenly breathe again and felt no pain. An angel guided him toward an incredibly bright light that engulfed them - thousands of times brighter than the sun yet not hurting his eyes. The light itself felt alive with love. Another angel appeared, identifying himself as the boy's guide, and showed him a life review where he could feel how his actions affected others. The guide emphasized that "it's the things that I do out of love that count." The experience included traveling backward through his life to being pure light before birth. He was told his mission wasn't complete and to forget everything and tell no one. A tall man with dark skin carried him out of the water after 22 minutes underwater. About 2,000 people had been searching for the boys two miles downriver. A police officer initially claimed they couldn't be the missing boys since no one could survive 22 minutes underwater. The boy temporarily lost his voice afterward and developed a stutter he didn't have before, but retained vivid memories of the experience despite being told not to share it.
