On November 3, 2003, John Ma underwent arthroscopic day surgery to remove a bone spur in his right shoulder. As a diabetic who hadn't taken insulin as directed, he experienced severe complications. The local anesthetic caused electrical tingling and pain, which doctors ignored. Post-surgery in recovery, his blood pressure crashed to 50/20, prompting emergency transfer to the cardiac ICU.
In the ICU, while staff rushed to insert IVs in both wrists and inject dopamine to constrict blood vessels, John felt he was being "crucified" with the bilateral wrist punctures. He was in and out of consciousness, feeling cold and knowing he was dying.
