In December 1979, a woman experienced a violent near-death experience when an assailant entered her bedroom and strangled her to unconsciousness. Without her glasses and unable to see clearly, she sat up only to have the attacker place his hands around her throat, increasing pressure until she passed out. The experience began with her observing from above the bathroom door, seeing herself on the bed with the assailant on top of her body. An all-encompassing darkness surrounded her before a burst of light enveloped her with unconditional love, eliminating all pain and paralyzing fear.
She perceived a tunnel with light at the end, its walls appearing smoke-like rather than solid. Looking for her hands to verify her presence, she discovered she had no body, existing purely as awareness rather than physical being. Moving toward the light, she heard her recently deceased father's voice speaking sternly in Spanish, saying "No es tu tiempo" (It is not your time). Her father had passed away weeks before, and she had said goodbye to him a week before his death. His familiar stern manner and native language confirmed his identity. Profound sadness accompanied the realization she must return to face her attacker. After the assault ended around 2 AM, she managed to call her boyfriend and police, receiving treatment at the county hospital. The experience left lasting trauma, including pregnancy from the assault requiring termination, ongoing counseling, and permanent hypervigilance about security. She couldn't discuss the NDE for decades, fearing institutionalization during an era when such experiences weren't understood or accepted. The NDE produced lasting heightened awareness she considers both blessing and curse. She experiences precognitive dreams, including seeing her sister pushing against a door weeks before her cancer diagnosis, and dreaming of two shiny buildings exploding a week before 9/11. Unable to share her violent NDE with support groups focused on peaceful experiences, she maintains anonymity as the assailant was never apprehended.
