In Spring 1964, the subject and friend were playing Barbies when they saw boys with innertubes heading to a creek. They followed without telling parents. The boys let them use a spare tube that wasn't fully inflated. After going over rapids, the friend felt an electric shock from a short in an irrigation pipe, causing the tube to flip. The subject hit their head on a rock, became unconscious, and was trapped underwater in a narrow rock canal. They saw themselves underwater, wedged between rocks with water coursing over their body, one foot up on an outside rock. They watched their friend standing on the bank looking afraid and repeatedly asked "Why doesn't she help me?" though the friend couldn't hear. They saw leaves fluttering in wind while remaining calm. Then experienced tumbling, pulling, jerking with shadowy places, figures, light glints, and leaf patterns with sunlight. The friend found a teenager mowing who rescued the subject by pushing them down the canal and lifting them out lifeless. An Eagle Scout, he performed artificial respiration while his mother called a doctor. After eight hours unconscious and delirious, they awoke in the hospital calm and serene. They told everyone they "saw what happened" but were dismissed as hallucinating. The experience left them terrified of basements and animals for years.
