In September 1998, at age 45, the subject suffered a heart attack at home while working on computer programming and smoking heavily. The episode began with dizziness, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Sharp pains radiated down the left arm with crushing chest pain. After calling 911, paramedics arrived and attempted to insert an IV but veins were collapsed. The subject felt they might die, asked their girlfriend to care for their dog, then collapsed to the kitchen floor. Upon hitting the floor, they experienced a distinct separation from their body, which had become a "poisonous vessel." There was no pain, only peace, and a floating sensation near the ceiling light or doorway. They experienced a rotating descent back to their body, with ceiling tiles spinning until suddenly still, staring up at a paramedic. Their first words were "Something very strange just happened..." The paramedics had experienced a flatline event requiring immediate stabilization. The heart attack was caused by severe electrolyte imbalance with critically low potassium, not arterial blockage. After treatment with IV and medication, they returned home that night. The experience led to immediate aging acceleration (hair graying, vision deterioration, dental problems, back issues) but also positive changes including successfully quitting smoking after nine years and moving to a better location for work.
