In May 1999, the subject was struck by a car while bicycling in Manhattan, suffering a broken ulna and broken ball joint in the left hip socket. Emergency surgery was performed about five hours after the accident. On the second night in the hospital, the subject awoke from sleep aware of being in two places simultaneously - physically in the hospital bed and walking down a long dark corridor. The corridor was gray on gray, about seven feet high walls, with no ceiling but a lighter gray sky above. It felt like a temporary transit zone with a sense of impermanence. At a Y-shaped junction, the subject understood that turning left meant choosing death while turning right meant choosing life. The left corridor emanated incredible peace, comfort, warmth and security - like being in the womb - extraordinarily beautiful though nothing was visible. The right corridor produced waves of frantic, frenetic, loud, confusing sensations like standing blindfolded in Times Square. Despite the appeal of the peaceful left path, the subject thought "I'm not ready yet. There's still too much I want to do" and chose the right path toward life. Upon stepping right, the corridor melted away and the subject was back in the hospital bed. The experience taught them about continuity after death and that ultimately we have control over our own destinies.
