A special education teacher on Thanksgiving vacation experienced a fatal heart arrhythmia while sleeping. A loud voice screaming "WAKE UP!" jolted him from sleep, saving his life by getting him out of bed. He experienced time slowing, strange colored lights, and knew he was dying. His partner called 911 and he collapsed on the couch. Paramedics found him with grey-blue head, bright red swollen body, 94-degree temperature, and no blood pressure. In the ambulance and ER, he alternated between blackness and awareness, insisting nothing was wrong despite critical condition. He then left his body, floating 8 feet above, observing with peripheral awareness of a familiar presence beside him. He saw paramedics in the hallway including an African American woman he thought was the ambulance driver, and his partner looking horrified and short compared to the paramedics. Looking down at the hospital table, he slowly realized the bearded man below was himself. Understanding he was dead, he sensed a bright void behind him with people standing there. He felt like who he was always supposed to be, seeing clearly from both eyes, understanding everyone's thoughts and feelings. When asked if he wanted to return, he hesitated, then experienced absolute unconditional love and felt what everyone in the room was feeling, plus all his disabled students throughout his career. Seeing himself held in the arms of a motherly/angelic figure moved him deeply, and he agreed to return. The doctor later explained he had died from V-tach fatal arrhythmia, with low body temperature because he had been dead before waking.
