On August 27, 1998, John Y fell from a ladder and landed feet first on the road, crushing and breaking both ankles, heels, and feet. His right foot was partially detached with bone protruding and blood gushing. He lay there for 5 minutes before being found. In the ambulance, the combination of pain, shock, and blood loss caused his vital signs to crash. The attendants yelled to the driver that he might not make it.
Upon hearing this, John became hysterical and began crying. At that moment, he saw angels flying around the roof of the ambulance, reaching down as if to pull him up to heaven. He became panicked and began flailing at the angels to chase them away, terrified he would never see his wife and son again. The experience was frightening rather than peaceful. When they reached the hospital, he initially thought he had been transported to "a hospital in heaven" until he saw his wife and realized he was still alive. John also experienced a vision showing his brother and ex-lover standing at his hospital bed, both angrily shouting they would take his son away. This vision proved prophetic - after his six-day coma, his brother spoke cruelly to him, seemingly wishing he had died, and did eventually take custody of his son. The experience was deeply unsettling and mixed, containing both divine beings and disturbing premonitions.
