A young man with Marfan Syndrome underwent aortic valve replacement surgery in 2014. His condition included severely impaired vision (corrected at 15), severe asthma, and an enlarged aorta. Before surgery, social workers visited asking about last wishes, unknowingly expecting him to die. During the operation, he suffered an asthma attack and woke struggling to breathe while surgeons scrambled for a ventilator. He suffocated and died for seconds. During death, he felt relaxed and saw himself on the operating table, his mother crying, surgeons setting up the ventilator, and family in the waiting room - all later confirmed. He entered what he calls "the Dark Place" or "void" - a state without emotion, thoughts, personality, or memories, yet remaining sentient. In this darkness, a loud male voice spoke a single word: "God." He was immediately resuscitated and placed in a medically-induced coma for two weeks. Upon waking, his first words were "I heard God!" though he doesn't remember saying it. Recovery took 4 months. Significantly, he had been an antitheist from ages 9-15, hating the Christian God despite not believing in his existence. Through religious process of elimination by 2016, he concluded he heard the Jewish/Christian God (YHWH), as the voice said "God" as His name with a booming male quality matching biblical descriptions. He believes the Dark Place was Sheol - the biblical grave or place of the temporary dead.
