After months of severe depression and barely eating, the individual attempted suicide by taking a bottle of sleeping pills at a supermarket one block from their home. Within minutes of ingestion, disorientation set in, and they struggled to make it home, going directly to bed upon arrival. What followed was a profound near-death experience that fundamentally transformed their relationship with existence and spirituality.
Initially, their world ceased to exist except for consciousness itself, trapped in a state of incredible wrongness and unease beyond description. This condition felt like eternal hell - a timeless, eternal agony with no possibility of hope or change. Time became meaningless in this void of suffering, creating an experience of being suspended in unchanging torment. Eventually, their consciousness separated from their body, floating above and observing their physical form convulsing violently on the bed below. At some point during this out-of-body state, they re-entered their body and returned to life. The experience has had profound and lasting effects over the three years since it occurred. Physical challenges persist, including difficulty with exercise and a tendency toward injury requiring careful movement. The ability to plan for the future has been lost. However, significant spiritual transformations have emerged: they became much quieter, gained the ability to meditate for the first time, and developed a previously unthinkable connection to God. The spiritual awakening includes experiences of overwhelming love that feels almost unbearable in its intensity. During meditation, they perceive mysterious sounds - sometimes like ringing, electrical wires, pulsing harmonics, or angelic singing. Life's former meaning has dissolved, replaced by a singular purpose: to know God. Despite ongoing challenges with embodiment, the experience has fundamentally reoriented their existence from depression and emptiness to divine connection and spiritual purpose.
