During a rafting trip with friends, the individual encountered dangerous rapids that their group tried unsuccessfully to avoid. The raft was pulled into a whirlpool and capsized, resulting in a life-threatening drowning incident. The person was pulled underwater multiple times - first for approximately 20 seconds, then surfacing briefly before being dragged down again for 30 seconds. After being thrown against a rock, they were pulled under for a third time.
During this third submersion, a remarkable out-of-body experience occurred. The person's spirit separated from their physical body and observed the drowning scene from about six feet away, remaining at the same level in the water. From this vantage point, they watched their own body struggling desperately underwater, along with two other people who were also fighting for their lives beneath the surface. Initially experiencing fear at the separation, an overwhelming sense of calm quickly enveloped their consciousness. The out-of-body state continued for approximately 30 seconds, during which they maintained clear observation of multiple bodies struggling in the churning water. The experience ended when their body was thrown against a rock for the final time - at that moment of impact, their spirit suddenly "popped" back into their physical form. The violent collision seemed to trigger the reunification of consciousness with body. Since this near-death experience, the person reports having gained a significantly better understanding of life and their personal purpose. The brief but profound separation from their physical form during a moment of extreme mortal danger provided insights that have had lasting impact on their perspective and life direction.
