In March 1970, during the fifth week of Army basic training, a soldier developed a severe illness following a cold bivouac experience. Starting with a 101-degree fever, ankle pain, and stiffness, his condition rapidly deteriorated. His temperature spiked to 105 degrees, and he experienced excruciating headaches that led him to hit his head against a wall for relief. He was eventually hospitalized and diagnosed with meningitis after a spinal tap revealed milky spinal fluid instead of the normal clear fluid.
During the medical crisis, while having his spinal column tapped, he experienced leaving his body and observing the procedure from above. He then traveled through a long dark tunnel toward a bright light where he encountered Mary and Jesus. During a life review, he felt guilty about various things but was assured the guilt was not his to keep. He was told he was loved and received information about his future, including that he could return to care for his spouse but must continue loving her even through divorce, and that his second spouse would have a dog that nearly dies. He also learned that all spirituality is good and no belief system is better than another. The experience included meeting someone's deceased brother with a message for his twin sister who wasn't actually a twin. Years later, he successfully delivered this message to a coworker whose brother died in Laos and whose name appeared on a scale model of the Vietnam Memorial. The experiencer was told about returning and not to fear the noise. After being in a coma for three days with complete organ failure, his condition dramatically reversed within 24 hours of the NDE. Following thirty days of sick leave and recovery, he returned to duty and met the medic who had performed the spinal tap, who expressed surprise at seeing him alive. The experience transformed his understanding of death as a natural continuum rather than failure, enabling him to better support cancer patients and families in his later career as a cancer specialist.
