In January 1983, a British Army member visiting a German disco bar was violently attacked while buying food outside. Two unknown men beat him to the ground, stamping on his body and kicking his head. After stumbling inside, he and friends who ran to help were attacked by eight men with knives. His friend was killed and he was stabbed in the chest, losing massive amounts of blood and unable to breathe before collapsing. His body continued being kicked and stamped while on the ground.
During this brutal attack, he felt no pain and experienced going down a tunnel toward an incredibly beautiful light that pulled him upward. The light was extraordinarily peaceful and joyous, making his heart sing with unconditional love. He reached out desperately wanting to reach the light and was about to touch it when he experienced falling backwards. He saw his body being given mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but felt annoyed at being pulled back, wanting to go "home" to the light instead. An off-duty nurse friend successfully resuscitated him after he had stopped breathing at the scene. He survived treatment in ICU at a local hospital. When he tried discussing the experience with an Army Chaplain, he was dismissed as imagining things and told to stop being foolish and "buck up his ideas." Remarkably, his mother in England, over 1000 miles away, experienced excruciating chest pain at the exact time of his stabbing, witnessed by her companion. She was the only person who believed his experience. The event profoundly changed his life and relationships, though most people including his wife and father didn't understand or believe what had happened to him.
