In March 1976, a 20-year-old IRS tax examiner experienced sudden paralysis from Guillain-Barre Syndrome following a job furlough and earthquake. The condition progressed rapidly over three days from tingling toes and weak shoulders to complete paralysis from the nose down. Despite an alert mind, the patient required mechanical ventilation in ICU after choking on water, spending months on life support with 24-hour monitoring. Doctors provided no timeline for recovery as few cases of this severity were documented, with only mechanical support available while waiting to see if the body would recover.
During one of two near-death episodes identified by medical staff, the patient experienced floating above their body after seeing a hooded figure described as an angel of death. They found themselves in a dark room with bright light from above, seeing only the knees, legs and feet of Jesus in white robes. An overwhelming wave of unconditional love and peace washed over them - feelings never experienced before or since. The presence, identified as God, communicated through pure thought that the patient should return to fulfill their destiny and become a writer, which seemed odd given their background as an engineer and artist. The patient desperately wanted to stay in this peaceful state but heard voices calling "Rudy, Rudy!" They remember God's final message: "I will heal thee." Upon returning to consciousness, they fell hard to the floor with a bleeding forehead, repeatedly saying "WOW!" to confused coworkers. Following prayer from their minister and a faith healer, movement began returning weeks later. After three months in ICU and three months of rehabilitation, they relearned basic functions including talking, writing, standing and walking, though permanent nerve damage and muscle weakness remained in their lower body. The experience gave them the ability to help their mother peacefully transition when she passed in 2017, believing their NDE partly served this purpose.
