The experiencer was swimming with three sisters and one sister's boyfriend when the water level rose sharply due to ship traffic in the river. Boat waves and engine suction/release caused dangerous water level changes. Unable to swim, he didn't feel it necessary until the sharp change occurred. Tragically, one of his older sisters died from drowning during this incident. He went to the surface twice, but on the third time underwater, he began to relax and felt peacefulness coming over him.
Toward the end of his decline in the water, he saw a lighted tunnel with individuals he couldn't remember or likely didn't know given his young age. These pleasant male and female adults were welcoming him into the tunnel. He specifically remembers making a conscious decision that it was not his time to pass. He pushed off from the river bottom, reached the surface, and his sister's boyfriend caught him. Following his sister's death, his parents' struggling relationship ended in separation. Growing up in a family of ten children, this near-death experience profoundly influenced his life trajectory. By nature becoming calm and relaxed, he learned to be insightful and determined under stress, first realizing this during high school athletics. He graduated from the United States Military Academy, served five years in the Army, and entered the rocket propulsion business. He has found peace and satisfaction helping others, particularly enjoying Rotary International Club membership of eight years. Married with two sons, one is beginning his second year at Temple Medical School. The experience shaped his life philosophy of service and achievement.
