While body surfing near San Diego, California, the experiencer was caught in an undertow and pulled underwater. Their brother was visible but out of hearing range to the left. Unable to reach the surface despite panicked struggling, they swallowed substantial amounts of water during their desperate attempts to breathe.
Suddenly, they became aware of complete silence, like ears popping but magnified. Light was visible, believed to be sunlight hitting the water above. They began feeling very warm and sleepy, which led them to stop struggling. Their thoughts turned to their brother and how he wouldn't be able to find them. They decided to take a nap and figure out how to escape the predicament upon waking. After closing their eyes and feeling warm and sleepy, they dozed off for what seemed like the shortest possible second. They were then suddenly thrust up and out of the water with great force. Finding themselves only chest-high in the water, they clambered onto the beach where they vomited several times and collapsed, shaking and struggling to breathe. Initially very shaken by the experience, they had mixed feelings - having felt so comfortable until being thrown from the water, after which their throat and stomach hurt badly with achy muscles for the afternoon's remainder. Since this experience, they have not been fearful of death, finding near-death to be very peaceful and not frightening once they knew it was coming. While they didn't take away anything particularly religious or spiritual, the peace of the experience has stayed with them.
