A 43-year-old psychiatrist was playing Gaelic Football when he was struck in the left side of his head by another player's hip at full speed. The impact lifted him off the ground, spinning him in the air before landing unconscious. Witnesses, including his nephew, report he was unconscious for 30-60 seconds with brief fitting and bleeding from his head. Team members worried he might be dead due to his unusual stillness.
During unconsciousness, he found himself in a black void with no sensory input except memory of a "click" from his left side. He experienced complete sensory deprivation but maintained full logical reasoning and language abilities. He felt comfortable, possibly floating in an enclosed space. Through clear reasoning, he deduced he was playing football and must be knocked out, growing slightly anxious about the duration. He then felt rapid backward and upward acceleration as if traveling a huge distance past blurred spots of light like stars. Feeling excitement about going somewhere wonderful, he recognized this as a near-death experience and thought "I can't, I'm not ready, I've got to go back." This seemed to trigger a sudden direction change. His next memory involved confused perception of grass, a swollen left eyelid, and hallucinatory images of the game with pink sky. The experience left him reflecting on consciousness during apparent unconsciousness. As a psychiatrist familiar with NDEs since reading Moody's work in the 1970s, he considers both neurological explanations and the possibility his "decision" to return saved his life. He retired from the sport afterward.
