The experiencer was talking on the phone when a lightning strike hit them in the face, throwing them backward. They separated from their body and observed the scene around them. A nurse who was waiting to use the phone immediately started CPR on their unconscious form.
During the out-of-body experience, they floated away from the immediate scene and saw their children playing before floating out of the building entirely. They were then bathed in a bluish-white light that had a sensation of acceleration and direction. The experiencer described being pure thought flowing in a wondrous river of peace and loving feeling. This state of blissful consciousness continued until they were suddenly back in their body and experiencing pain. Medical follow-up with a cardiologist and neurologist revealed no lasting deleterious effects from the lightning strike. However, within that year, the person developed an insatiable desire to listen to piano music, play it, and later compose it, despite having only one year of piano lessons at age seven with no prior interest. The experiencer became a case study of Dr. Oliver Sacks, presumably due to the unusual development of musical abilities following the lightning strike and near-death experience. This sudden acquisition of musical talent represents a rare but documented phenomenon following certain types of brain trauma or near-death experiences.
