During the 2016 presidential debates, the experiencer suffered a severe kickscooter accident, landing directly on their knee after hitting a pinecone. The impact caused a broken patella (kneecap) and sent them into shock. After returning home in extreme pain, they attempted to sleep in a bathtub to stay near the bathroom. Upon lying down with elevated knee, they experienced severe nausea and recognized symptoms of shock from internet research.
The NDE began as the ceiling appeared to come closer. Their body felt arched with their heart leading upward. All sounds became muffled and they experienced intense meditative peace and bliss. They realized they were dying and felt complete, not grasping for any earthly possession or person. The experience felt comforting, simple, and full. Their 18-year-old cat entered the bathroom and sat beside the tub, seeming to sense their spirit leaving. Out of concern that no one would care for the cat as well as they did, they "swam" backward and down to return to their body. The cat remained calm throughout, demonstrating awareness of the spiritual event. After returning, they slammed the bathroom door repeatedly to wake others for help, but no one responded. They received visions while making their way downstairs: seeing their grandfather, questioning need for medical help, and seeing themselves being wheeled from the hospital in a wheelchair. They also heard about an ex-boyfriend and recalled his words "you choose your own death." They called 911, went to the hospital where X-rays confirmed the broken patella. They declined surgery, choosing self-rehabilitation instead. The experience included premonitions and synchronicities that proved meaningful.
