A 45-year-old man underwent pancreatectomy surgery for ampullary cancer in July 2011. Following complications requiring multiple surgeries, he was placed in a drug-induced coma and intubated. His condition became grave with ARDS, double pneumonia, pseudomonas infection, sepsis, and a pseudoaneurysm causing bleeding from multiple orifices. After five surgeries, including one leaving a football-sized open hole in his abdomen, doctors gave him little chance of survival.
During his coma, he experienced an out-of-body event where nurses came to his room asking for help because he was a paramedic. He found himself in the adjacent room helping resuscitate a black man in his mid-fifties who had coded. He assisted with administering drugs, CPR, and defibrillation attempts. After the doctor pronounced the man dead, he returned to his room and observed the man's wife in the hallway - a black woman in her mid-50s with shoulder-length greyish-black hair wearing a bluish-white mid-calf dress, crying and screaming. Weeks later at home, he told his wife this wasn't a dream but felt completely real. His wife then revealed he had accurately described the man, his wife, and the events that occurred. However, at the time he was in deep drug-induced coma, unresponsive and sleeping. When the adjacent patient coded, they mistakenly called the code blue for his room number, causing his wife to fear he had died. She confirmed there was no way he could have seen the man or his wife from his room, especially while comatose. This veridical out-of-body experience, with multiple specific details confirmed by his wife who witnessed the actual events, provides strong evidence for consciousness existing independently of the physical body during extreme medical crisis.
