A 13-year-old New Zealand schoolgirl participated in a breathing technique with classmates that was supposed to create a feeling of being high. After taking deep breaths and standing quickly, she blacked out and hit her head. Friends reported she fell backwards like a plank and was unconscious for about a minute.
During her unconscious state, she experienced floating above her friends who surrounded her body calling her name. She then found herself in an otherworldly place moving upward where she encountered a woman who looked like Carol Brady from The Brady Bunch. This figure radiated incredible, powerful maternal love that the experiencer had not received from her own mother. Present but blurred were figures representing her father and siblings. The experiencer hugged the mother figure and cried with relief, feeling she had returned to "The Real Place" where time is infinite and earthly life is just a brief experience. She recognized this place as the actual reality, pronouncing "I'm back!" and understanding that earthly existence is temporary while this realm is eternal. She felt she was supposed to forget this knowledge but vowed to remember. Authority figures described as balding men with a mafia-like presence told her she must forget. When the family said she had to return, she cried and repeatedly said "no" as she fell backward away from the crying mother figure. She awoke in her body crying after what friends said was about a minute, though it felt much longer to her. The experience gave her lasting knowledge that the "normal state" is temporary and that there exists an infinite, more real place that is home.
